Legalizing Marijuana

Is marijuana really bad for you? This is what I questioned myself in the 8th grade as I went through many D.A.R.E sessions and society was saying that it was a bad thing. I eventually went to high school and was peer pressured but always turned it down because of what society told me. Well one day in college, I needed an essay topic to research and I thought this was a great idea. As I researched it I saw a lot of pros of using this “drug” and very little cons. A few cons that I saw was smoking it leads to lung cancer. Scientifically it is right because smoking anything can lead to lung cancer. Its not the plant but it’s the smoke. Smoking water vapor could also result in lung cancer because its still smoke. Another con I saw was focused on people who smoke through plastic bongs. Such as water bottles created to smoke out of. Many pros are that cancer patients use this plant to gain appetite. After cancer patients go through chemotherapy, it usually kills the appetite and the plant brings it back. Another pro is that it can be a bonus to the economy. Have you noticed that the things that actually can kill you are legal? Such as liquor is legal, cancer sticks also known as cigarettes are legal. If marijuana was legal, then it would be easily accessible and a tax could be placed on it to make money.

How do you feel about marijuana and the effects?

How do you feel about how the plant is placed under the societal damage?

Why do you think its not fully legal yet?

  1. I agree that marijuana has more pro's than con's. I feel like the only reason its illegal is because of the governments greed, fear, and racist background. For a long time, marijuana was legal. It wasn't until the government realized how much money it was bringing in that they tried to regulate it.

  2. Living in California, I am personally not against marijuana. It has a lot of benefits and I think its illegal because of its recreation use. The legality of marijuana would I think cause even younger people to start trying it. Also its effects, although not bad, are not conducive for a busy schedule because of the sleepy side effect.

  3. I do believe that it would make a lot of money and the government should consider it. Marijuana is sold for medical use and is proven to help people. If they did legalize it I believe it should be limited.
